5 Tips for Growing Tomatoes at Home
Getting Started
Tomatoes are one of the most rewarding vegetables to grow at home. With the right care, even a beginner can harvest a bumper crop.
1. Choose the Right Variety
For small spaces, try cherry tomatoes like 'Sun Gold' or 'Sweet 100'. For larger gardens, beefsteak varieties produce incredible slicing tomatoes.
2. Give Them Full Sun
Tomatoes need at least 6β8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Pick the sunniest spot in your yard or place containers on south-facing balconies.
3. Water Consistently
Irregular watering causes blossom end rot and cracking. Aim to keep the soil evenly moist β about 1β2 inches of water per week.
4. Feed Regularly
Once plants start flowering, switch to a low-nitrogen, high-phosphorus fertilizer to encourage fruit production over leafy growth.
5. Stake and Prune
Support your plants with cages or stakes, and remove suckers (small shoots in the crotch of branches) to focus energy on fruit.
Happy growing! π
